Summertime
Summer is here and we are pretty much into our summer break from school. That does feel nice. My second oldest just took a last semester test from A Beka history and she is officially done...except for some read and think skill sheets she will do over the summer. Evie and I have been doing a lot of reading from her Sonlight books, which has been so enjoyable. Gracie will be working on her Apologia Biology over the summer...but all in all, we are done with our normal school schedule. Breaks are good! Some of you may have noticed that I have not had a Monday Menu the last few weeks. I may have one sometime soon, but lately we have been eating out, grilling, and eating lots of salads and sandwiches...so I didn't want to bore you with my summertime lack of cooking. We have been on the go more and have not been home enough to make a menu and stick with it. Isn't that what summer is all about???
This is our first summer in forever that someone is not playing softball! We have not been to the ball park all year and it does feel strange! But my flip flops have stayed dust free and my little ones clothes are not stained with snow cone syrup and mud. That has been a welcome treat for me! In a way, I miss those fun days at the ball park.It is fun to get to see people out there...catch up on what is going on with other families in our town and just see how the children are growing up. I'm sure we will be back with full force in a few years when Evie and Jack Henry begin their ball careers!
I thought I would do a fun summer Thursday Thirteen to share some of the things we will be doing over the summer. I have not done a TT in so long!!!

Compliments of Chaotic Mom.
1) The remodeling job is still going on upstairs...but we are almost done! It should be done in 2 weeks! They just have to put in cabinets, paint, and add the flooring, which is carpet and tile. This was a bonus space that is being made into a bedroom, bathroom, and huge closet. Since we already have a big playroom downstairs, we knew this may someday need to be another bedroom. When this project is finished, it will give us 5 regular size bedrooms and one small nursery. I will show you pictures when it is done. My oldest is helping with the decor...it is going to be painted a rich tan or light brown with dark cream trim. The bathroom is going to be a dark red with copper hardware. We are going to have made a big mirror with a nice ornate frame around it. Her furniture is black (or espresso dark brown) with white and brown bedding. She has room for a big black work table for her computer and school work, sewing, or scrapbooking. And, we plan to add a big chair or chaise lounge for her to have a sitting area for reading. We added a dormer with a window seat, too! It should be really pretty when it is all done.
2) We are painting all the children's bedrooms and moving everybody. This will be done after the room upstairs is finished. Jack Henry will move from our small nursery (which will be Lydia's room) into a big boy bed! I love his new furniture we got. We will be using this patchwork quilt, blue walls, and coffee colored furniture. We have some really cute sports art work picked out for his walls. Boy's room are so fun!!!
3) Gracie is at a National Leadership forum this week-this is one of her fun summertime adventures. She is having so much fun and learning a lot, too. The list of speakers is amazing. I think she enjoys the independence of being on a college campus...having her own schedule, etc. We hope to provide this kind of opportunity at least once a year until college.
4) SWIM! We will be swimming a lot! Having a pool at our house has been wonderful! I thank my husband every year for allowing us this luxury!
5) Our trip to the Mountains is coming up! We can't wait. We will be going to the Smoky Mountains and visiting here, here, here, and here. As well as lots of other fun things. We have a house rented in the mountains and lots of my family will be there, too. Fun times!
6) Soccer camp for our little soccer girl!
7) Read lots of good books. We bought some really great books at the homeschool convention...Lamplighter books and other various things.
8) Daddy's trip with the big girls. This is a yearly tradition. They go with another dad in town and their girls. They do things like water parks, rock climbing walls, movies, camping, going to the lake, lots of ice cream and anything else they can think of. They always look forward to this fun time with their dad! I'm sure Mike will continue this tradition as the little ones get bigger.
9) I will be taking a spend the night trip with my second oldest...this is a very special weekend away that I have already done with my oldest. We talk about some very important things and prepare her for her teen years and young womanhood. We will eat out, shop, talk a lot, ask a lot of questions, go for a walk, etc. We decided a long time ago we would do this with our children individually when they were around 10-12 years old. It was a blessing and a great memory maker with my oldest. I'm sure it will be with each child. I'm looking forward to this!
10) Redo the little nursery. This room was built by us to be a craft room or exercise room. We knew when we were expecting again a few years ago, it would be the perfect nursery! We have since put it to good use! It is right off from our master bedroom! I am going to repaint, get new bedding and spruce up the room with stuffed panda bears. I may work on this more in the fall as we prepare for our referral. I hope Lydia will love it!
11) Zoo trip!
12) Mission trip...my oldest will be going on her second mission trip. She is all excited about this! They have planned since February and have worked really hard to raise money for it. My second oldest will be going on a church canoe trip with Mike...this will be her first time to do anything with the *youth* of our church.
13) We will end our wonderful summer with our annual beach trip. After everyone else gets back into school, we head to the beach for quiet, uncrowded beach time. (one of the perks of homeschooling! : )) This ends our summer...what a great ending!

I am a stay at home mother to 4. I am very blessed to have a godly husband who loves the Lord and his family. I welcome the days of much needed grace, the times of sweet victories, and the tears of trials, knowing it is all for God's glory. I want my lifesong to sing to Him,the author and finisher of my faith. Soli Deo Gloria--To the Glory of God alone.

Your renos sound great! And your summer sounds great too! Pictures, woman! We need pictures! :-)
I just had to comment and say I love your blog! I keep finding sites of moms whose kids who are all younger, so it is nice to find one with kids more my kids ages. We are considering adoption also, and money is an object, so I appreciated your post on affording adoption.
I cannot wait to see your re-do pictures! Since we are *not* moving we are going to do some remodeling as well. I love new ideas :)
Samuel needs his entire bedroom spruced up. He is still sleeping in the "firetruck" bed and the boy is way too big for that!
A pool would be so awesome :) Your summer sounds fantastic. Tomorrow is our last day of school!!! Yipee ;)

Hey, Kim!
Thanks for the great update of your family summer plans! It was fun to read!
Love,
Krista
What a great summer plan you have! That is a great perk of home schooling, we do the same thing!!
Tweetsie Railroad is a lot of fun!
I love the idea of taking a weekend away with your daughter, its so important that we bless them into their womanhood, that they will walk into it with confidence knowing that they have a mom that loves and encourages them.
Sounds like a wonderful summer.
Biltmore is great!!
I agree, after all the kids are in school...great time to hit the beach. We do this because Colton is young enough.
HI Kim!
I just had to write and tell you that you are vacationing very close to where I live. We are about an hour away from the biltmore and tweetsie (as well as the other stuff too).
Matter of fact - my hubby has gone this morning with our youngest to tweetsie. This is a daddy/ daughter one on one thing he has done with each of them and we have season passes to tweetsie so we will go quite often this summer too!
I know that it would be a trek (and I don't know when you are coming) being an hour away but I would like to invite you to visit us at our church if you are looking for a place to worship. My hubby is the pastor - we are Methodist however but we'd love to have you!
I am so blessed by your blog so often and I would loveto thank you for that.
Mindy,
We may be traveling on a Sunday, but if we are able to see you, that would be great! Can you give me the name and town of your church?
Email me! (you can email me from my blog)
Kim
Just popped by to check in--great to hear about what is going on with you and your family! You are vacationing around the area where I am from--the mountains are beautiful. Enjoy!
That all sounds fun, Kim. I'm so excited for you to spend some time in the NC mountains. I will be VERY close to you :) It's so beautiful. I pray you and your family enjoy your time there. Blowing Rock is my absolute favorite place on earth. My husband knows when I need some *down time*, we skip over there. My children love it also. Enjoy!
I just loved reading about all your summer adventures. It sounds so wonderful. You will be busy that is for sure. I can't wait to see your reno pictures, very exciting!
Hope you are having a happy day!
Laura
Wow! You are so very blessed. Sounds like you've got a terrific summer lined up-- I hope you post lots of pictures. :)
I have just begun to think about out summer plans. We recently moved and have a few painting projects and lots of yard work.
I lovethe quilt you picked for your son.....very boy. And I love Lamplighter books too.
Sounds like so much fun!
My oldest daughter is on a mission trip in Canada right now. She is having a great time.
Lovely plans! Biltmore is wonderful. We love the grounds even more than the house, and they have summer jazz evenings at the winery that are so relaxing. We used to have passes to there and to Chimney Rock and would go often.
Oh, Kim, you're headed to my old stomping grounds. We used to live just 30 minutes from the Smoky Mtn. National Park. I also loved our visit a couple years ago to the Biltmore. I'd recommend taking two days to see everything leisurely, rather than packing it all into one day.
What a fun summer! Enjoy!
