Fear...Is it Your Imagination?
Most of the time, yes. I don't know if you are this way, but I tend to make myself fearful because of the imaginations that I conjure up in my head. For example, if Mike is a few minutes late home from work and he hasn't called...I think,"Is he in an accident or has he had a heart attack?"...Gracie is not answering her cell phone...what is wrong? Is she okay? I can come up with all kinds of ridiculous scenarios that could happen to someone that I love. My thoughts immediately go to the wild(very unlikely) thought up ideas or the worse case scenarios from Fox news. Why? Because my heart is weak, wicked, and can not be trusted...even with my thought life. We are our own worst enemy, are we not?

This sinful fear and worry can cause lots of problems for the Christian woman. And we must guard our hearts and minds constantly so that it does not swallow us up. We have a natural God given quality that makes us take care of, nurture, and look out for those we love...and that is a good thing. But, when we take our eyes off of Christ and His supreme reign over every event that happens or could happen, we can easily get caught up in anxiety, worry, depressions, fear, and even hopelessness. The antidote? Completely trusting in the One who is all powerful, all wise, and all knowing...He knows everything, has the wisdom to know how to do things best, and He has the power to do it--plus, He loves us.

Why would any of us waver in our thoughts from this wonderful God who loves us with an everlasting love? Trusting Him...that is the place and state of mind I desire the most.

Elyse Fitzpatrick says this in a book that I read and reread...

Fear that exists in our imagination is a formidable foe. But it can be put to death by the Spirit and faith. The great English preacher, Charles Spurgeon once preached a sermon on needless fear. Here is a portion of what he said:

"...many of God's people are constantly under apprehensions of calamities which will never occur to them, and they suffer far more in merely dreading them than they would have to endure if they actually came upon them. In their imagination, there are rivers in their way, and they are anxious to know how they shall wade through them, or swim across them. There are no such rivers in existence, but they are agitated and distressed about them...these timid people are continually crossing bridges that only exist in their...fancies. They stab themselves with imaginary daggers, they starve themselves in imaginary famines, and even bury themselves in imaginary graves..."

From Overcoming Fear, Worry, and Anxiety by Elyse Fitzpatrick

I am reminded of Philippians 4:8:

Finally, brothers, whatever is TRUE, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

Great post. I read this book about a year ago and it was so challenging for me. It really gets to the heart of fear and worry.

What a great post! I am guilty of letting crazy scenarios play out in my mind at times also. I read this post at just the right time as well. Thank you Kim!

I never realized much fear in my life until I had children. And then even seemingly every day things and things I'd once enjoyed (taking a long road trip for example) became scary to me. I live in a constant low-level fear that something will happen to my kids. So much so that I often miss making great memories because I want to keep them "safe". The past two years even the summer swimming season - something I used to LOVE - have been less than wonderful because I am scared by toddler will drown. And add to that my guilt about even THINKING those things as a mother and I have a lot if wrestling with fear in my life. But I am so thankful for the comfort of the LORD and the WORD in all situations.
