Books, books, and more books

Compliments of Chaotic Mom
If you read my 2007 meditations, you know I have been desiring to work on my Christian mind lately(Romans 12:1-2--to have a renewed mind)...to fill my mind with God's Word first and foremost and read more books. Of course,I desire for biblically sound books that will shed light on the great Truths of Scripture, while exhorting me and challenging me to think more biblically. I decided to copy Kelly's idea from last week and list the books I would like to read in 2007. It will probably take me all of the year to read them all...I'm no Leslie!
I really do enjoy reading and I know I need to read more. After having baby #3 and #4, I have not been reading as much. My husband has been teaching me at times from what he has been reading, which is great, but I need to read, too!
Here is my list. You can click on them to find out more.
1) The Practice of Godliness by Jerry Bridges. This is the book for the women's Bible study I am in right now.
2) Damsels in Distress by Martha Peace. Those of you who know me,know I love Martha Peace's book The Excellent Wife...I've heard this one is good, also.
3) Elizabeth Prentiss:More Love to Thee by Sharon James. I'm participating in the Girls Talk book club!!!
4) Carried Safely Home by Kristin Swick Wong
5) Humility:True Greatness by CJ Mahaney...this will be my second time to read this.
6) Loved by Choice:True Stories that Celebrate Adoption by Susan Horner
7) The Pursuit of Holiness by Jerry Bridges. I'd love to read all of his books.
8) Attaching in Adoption by Deborah D.Gray. I thought this one might be helpful as we wait for Lydia.
9) Knowing God by J.I. Packer...finally going to get this one after MANY recommendations!
10) Old Paths by J.C. Ryle
11) Expository Thoughts on the Gospels J.C. Ryle
12) Treasuring God in our Traditions by Noel and John Piper
13) When I don't Desire God: How to Fight for Joy by John Piper
This should keep me busy!
Ooops...I guess I am making this a Thursday Fourteen list! I forgot one very important one. I am reading Girl Talk by Carolyn Mahaney with my 2 oldest daughters in the afternoons. We are meeting together, reading it out loud, and then discussing it. It should be profitable for their lives....and mine, too.

I am a stay at home mother to 4. I am very blessed to have a godly husband who loves the Lord and his family. I welcome the days of much needed grace, the times of sweet victories, and the tears of trials, knowing it is all for God's glory. I want my lifesong to sing to Him,the author and finisher of my faith. Soli Deo Gloria--To the Glory of God alone.

Well Kim, I admire you in that your list is all non-fiction! Being a person who can zoom through fiction and biographies, but gets bogged down with teaching type books, I consider you an inspiration. :v)
"Treasuring God in our Traditions" has really peeked my interest, though. I just might have to add that to my list for this year!
Sounds like a great list. Hope you'll write reviews as you cross them off.
The Attaching in Adopting is so important. I wish everyone was required to read this before getting their child. You are a huge step ahead already! (I know this just from some friends who adopted and have had major issues with attachement disorders later on). I love your list!
I will have to take a closer look at that list! Thanks for posting it!
Hi, Kim:
I've been reading your blog for a few months now and am finally getting around to letting you know how much I enjoy it. You remind me of a Proverbs 31 woman. Thanks for your inspiring blog! I'm praying for you and your family, and precious little girl waiting to be adopted.
Looks like a great list! I look forward to hearing about them.
I have some JC Ryle on my list for later in 2007. He's amazing, but thick reading!
Dear anonymous:
Thank you for your encouraging words. I am not a proverbs 31 woman...far from it...but that is my hearts desire. I'm so glad you have enjoyed my blog. I pray I can be an encouragement to you as you have been to me. With sincere thanks...
Kim
Ooh! #13 looks like something I could use - I have a hard time with that issue in dark seasons.
I like the Thursday 13 (14, this time). I enjoy coming through and looking for insights, wisdom and encouragement. Thanks for being you and for "working on your Christian mind."
Kim,
Enjoyed your list. A few new books I haven't heard of before look very interesting.
I am reading Girl Talk as well with my oldest daughter. I will do it again with my younger daughter.
I often think it would be fun to have some discussions over books. It is difficult to find the time with friends in real life to have book discussions with bible studies and everything else.
I would love to join in with you on some of your choices and maybe some others would too. Let me know if this is something of interest.
I am presently reading the two biographies I mentioned on my blog. But I could possibly squeeze one more in. :)
I like your list! I think I might try reading these too! Many I haven't heard of! Thanks!
Great list. I really like The Excellent Wife book too.
The last one--When I Don't Desire God--was one of the first Piper books I ever read. It is excellent. This book includes the great scripture memorization plan that I use.
I can't wait for Hannah to be old enough for us to read books together like you're doing with your girls! That is wonderful!
Happy reading!!
I love that you read with your girls. How special.
Great selection of books.
I really want to get The Excellent Wife.
Kim, Not sure if you remember who I am...Jenny Beth Walker, Jayme (Stake) Walker's sister-in-law. She guided me to your website and I have so enjoyed visiting it often. The girls have grown so much (since Jayme and Bret's wedding) and I have enjoyed "meeting" your two younger children. I enjoyed your reading list. I'll also be interested to read what you think of them. There are so many good books out there, I like to read only upon recommendation. Also, wanted to ask how the dress shopping went (for Gracie's father/daughter banquet). We just had a baby girl, Whitlee...well actually I should say she will be a year on March 1st. And my mind is already turning at what all she will have to go through, growing up as a girl (our son intimidates me as well as this is TOTALLY unchartered area for me). I wanted to ask your opinion...how do you feel or what do you think when girls wear a shirt underneath a spaghetti strapped shirt? I respect your convictions and am just curious what your perspective would be. Keep writing...it is so encouraging to read your website.
Loved, Loved, Love "Humility:True Greatness" by CJ Mahaney. I try to read it once a year.
Hmmm should look up some of these. I got a nice gift certificate to a bookstore for Christmas. =)
