Veggies!

For today's What Works for Me,Shannon wanted us to post on healthy eating and what we do to encourage that in our family. I have no creative or state of the art super fantastic idea....this is just what I try to do on a consistent basis.

I serve lots of veggies. Some of the ways I offer fresh veggies to my family is making a stir fry. I just use olive oil and saute whatever veggies I have on hand....usually brocolli, carrots, onions, sometimes sugar snap peas, asparagus, zuchinni, squash, and peppers...just whatever sound good. I serve it over brown rice with a little teriyaki sauce. It is very easy and is healthy! I try to do this on the weekends when I don't have a huge meal planned or just when I am in a pinch and need something quick and healthy.

Another thing I have started doing more is having raw veggies all ready-washed,cut and ready to eat in zip loc bags. I get these out when I am preparing lunch and let everyone munch...the kids are usually hungry after doing school all morning. I put out a bowl of ranch dip and let them eat as much as they want. This usually works at lunch or dinner. My almost 4 year old loves this!

I am not a big sweets person...I just don't need sweets and don't crave them...although dessert and coffee every once in a while is nice...I don't keep a lot of sweets at our home. For snacks,I offer things like chex mix, granola bars, peanut butter and crackers, goldfish, veggies and ranch dip:),and popcorn. We do not keep cookies, cakes, and sweet type things to snack on. I may make an occasional dessert...but overall,I try to encourage healthy eating for us!

This works for me! To find out what works for others, visit Shannon's place!

Great tips, Kim! I find that if I keep those cut up veggies, the kids will help themselves to that more than the junk food.

I love these tips. I strive to make my home a healthy home. Beginning this year and continuing for as long as we are here together. You have inspired me! :) I think, because we LOVE to have dessert, that I will start making fruit salad instead and only make one *fattening* dessert a month! Sorry, thinking out loud! Thanks for sharing!

My tip: use low fat cream cheese and herbs. Our family has been following a low fat, no sugar diet for several months now. I've lost over 15 pounds, our teen is enjoying cooking and my husband's blood sugar has dropped from a dangerous 400 to 140. Kudos for the low fat theme ladies.

I would love eating at your house. Olive oil is a favorite around here! Great quick snack ideas.

FYI-I answered your comment on the popcorn.

Have a great day!

On your weekly menu plan, you had a recipe for pork chops. My husband loves pork chops and BBQ sauce, so I think he'd love this combo. Do you use boneless or boned pork chops. It probably doesn't matter, but I was curious!! :-)

I like stir fry, and I am going to try adding some of the veggies you listed.

Great tips! My youngest has been diagnosed with wheat and egg allergies, so a lot of packaged food is out. Good ideas for snacks and a quick, easy veggie dinner.

Erin--

I have actually used both...center cut pork chops with the bone in and butterfly chops that are really thick...it was good with either one!

The coke is a tenderizer,so they are so good!

Great tips. I love healthy food. On the other hand my husband LOVES/OBSESSED with junk food. So I feel like it is an up hill battle to teach our son, whom seems to be leaning towards the junk food side.
All I do is PRAY! Pray for the desire for healthy foods in our home.
