I'm Walking on Sunshine...and Don't It Feel Good?!

He looks so big, doesn't he? He is growing up and everyday I see more of a little man instead of a baby. My husband, the sports photographer that he is, got this great shot Saturday at our 2nd oldest's state soccer tournament. Little Jack Henry was having so much fun. Some bigger children were having races and they let my 2 youngest run races with them. They were letting the little ones win. Jack Henry is running looking back checking out where his opponent is, laughing the whole time! What a joyful little guy!

Having a son has put a whole new dimension on our family. The teaching and training is different in some ways and the level of activity is VERY different...but very fun! I love having a son and am very grateful to the Lord to allow us to raise a son. The different ways we are raising Jack Henry is that we will be giving him a strong sense of leadership roles in our family...even though he is the youngest right now...He must learn how to take care of others and be a servant leader, like his daddy . We will be teaching and training him to be the sole provider for his future wife and children. We already tell him this at age 2! Where as with the girls, we are focusing strongly on training them to be a godly wife and mother. As a homeschool mom, I feel somewhat challenged and overwhelmed with his future schooling, knowing that he will need to be able to provide for a family and we must prepare him solidly for that in these early years before college and all. I know God has a wonderful plan for his life and we pray we can be the right kind of parents to encourage and challenge him along the way.

It is a beautiful day here, so I am off to enjoy it! Have a great day!

What a little cutie! And it sounds like you guys are doing an amazing job of raising him! Thanks for the post, I love the reminder of how diligent we need to be in raising our sons to be godly men! Thanks!

What a beautiful boy! They don't get any cuter than that.

I have a one year old son and I've never ever thought about about raising him to become a spiritual leader of his own family someday. Of course, I want that for him, but I didn't have that kind of Dad and didn't have brothers, so it never ocurred to me that boys are raised differently than girls.

Hmm. Are there any books (other than the Bible of course, which will be my primary guide) you recommend on this subject? I've noticed lots of books about raising boys and wondered if any addressed this specific issue.

Thanks for, once again, writing a post that inspired me to think about the things that are important to my family. :)

A great book that my husband recommends is: *Raising a Modern Day Knight* by Robert Lewis. Subtitle is A Father's role in guiding His son to authentic manhood. So, it is written to Fathers. I have not read it, but my husband said it was good and helpful.

He is such a little cutie! What a great picture. Dallas and I are trying to prepare ourselves for becoming parents, even though a child is not yet on the way. This was great. My husband will want to read this.

Some other good resources with raising sons is:

Vision Forum's *Rebuilding a Culture of Virtuous Boyhood*...I believe this is on audio.

JC Ryle has a great book called *Thoughts for Young Men*.

Hope this gives you some things to look into.

He is so cute! I understand your thoughts about raising a boy as a homeschooling mother. We are raising our own two boys with the vision and focus for them to provide for their future spouses and families. My husand is also reading the book, Raising a Modern Day Knight, and he is enjoying it very much also. Thank you for a wonderful blog. I am greatly encouraged by your posts. Blessings!

What a beautiful picture and what a beautiful boy!!!!
With 3 girls I don't have any idea what a boy would be like....Don't know if I ever will -- I will wait and see what God plans for me.
I absolutely love that you (someone besides me) are thinking about how you should raise him at 2. I feel like when I start talking about teaching my girls to be godly women and wives (especially if I say the "submission" word) I get stares like I am green and have antenae on top of my head.
blessing to you and your family!

Very handsome young man!!! Actually, absolutely adorable!

Excellent recommendations Kim!!! We are going through, for the 2nd time, JC Ryle's book, "Thoughts For Young Men", with out older 2 boys. We first went through it with them when they were 9 and 10 years old. Now they are 12 and 13 and we feel it is time again.

That is an awesome picture! He is so cute, and he is getting so big!! I love his cute little hair-cut!

I totally agree with all that you are saying about raising boys to be men! It is such a challenge! But, no doubt, God will give us all that we need along the way. . .

That picture is adorable, it looks professional!

I understand your concerns about your son and homeschool, I said that exact same things about my sons providing for a family.

God gives and takes away peace as He leads us and I'm sure He will do that in this situation.

If you are to continue though high school, then God will equip you for just that.

He looks like he's all boy and lots of fun, enjoy him!
